Hi everyone, So I have been recently working on a new Fozzie Bear puppet. Below are some photos of the puppet, I hope you like him .He has been completely hand made by myself including a hand built hat and tie with custom "fozzie bear tie" pattern.
Fozzie is one of my favorite puppets to build , he is actually quite tricky to get all the proportions correct ( without original patterns) He is certainly not just a bear with a hat and tie.
But the coolthis about this Fozzie is that he is a mini puppet :) - you can see him compared to my normal Fozzie head which I am still working on. Thats right this Fozzie puppet is only 10 inches tall - you can see how small he is next to the real size Fozzie. He was such fun to make. hope you guys like him. Have a great day.

Ok so I had a few spare hours today so I stripped my Gonzo I had started a while back. I took off his fur which I wasn't happy with and also his eyelids. I had treated some fur a while ago to look more like the new gonzo fur, I've never been happy with the "sherpa" style fur for gonzo ( even though its the fur they used on the MR gonzo replica) If you look at the real gonzo , its not the same kind of fabric. So I treated some fur and tried to replicate gonzo fur. The eyelids were more or less just replaced and new - no big alterations. I am pretty happy with the new head now its all been put together, I will try and take some photos over the next few days. Have a great day.

Four Armed Hoodie Sea Monster is finished . I'm really happy how he turned out ( although the four armed hoodie was a pain to make, it looks great! ) He has a mouth similar to Beaker from the Muppets and is quite flexible - I will make a video soon and post it.

ABOVE is the spiderman shirt I custom made for the Baby Brother puppet. Most of the clothing used for my puppets are custom built. Clothing usually has to be custom built because of the size of childrens clothing , puppets usually have different proportions to children - so unfortunately childrens clothing can't be used for example puppets usually have a much wider neck than children and doesn't usually need to be as long as store bought clothing , as you can see by the spiderman t-shirt I recently built. Also to help show the tummy of the baby the front of the shirt has a slight rise in the middle to give the illusion of a fatter tummy.

Above is a video of the baby Brother puppet finished. The video shows his eyebrow mech which allows him to get angry and also his loose jaw. He has removable arm rods, posable fingers and posable toes. Entry if from the back which allows him to sit on your lap etc. He is also wearing custom made diaper and spiderman t-shirt. Overall I am happy with the way he has turned out from the amazing initial sketch that Eric Scales designed.

Today I started to clothe the baby brother puppet. He will be wearing a diaper and T-shirtABOVE - shows his diaper , made from cotton with wadding inside to give a puffy look to the diaper.
ABOVE - After patterning his T-shirt design I have made a spiderman designed T-shirt very similar to the original sketch that Eric drew. Still needs the ribbing around the top of the T-shirt and the spider logo in the middle of the T-shirt - but I actually really like it. I made the T-shirt slightly shorter at the front to show a little of the puppets tummy

PUPPET EYES

I get asked a lot about where I get my eyes from for my puppets, the answer is there is no one place to buy puppet eyes. I have seen a few half dome eyes for sale over the years on the internet , but to be they have a "plastic" look to them - maybe its the shine of them. All of my eyes are custom made for each puppet, I use any plastic sphere or dome I can find from everyday products - I have even used a certain area of a juice container to help create the eye shape I was after. Lets say we want a half dome eye similar to kermit the Frogs eyes - Once you find the size you are after ( lets say for this example we are using a ping pong ball)

1) Cut the ping pong ball slightly larger than half ( so you will need a ball for each eye, not one ball cut in half)

2) Lightly sand the dome with the finest sandpaper you can buy, also sand off any logos etc

that the ping pong ball may have.

3) Once both are sanded, give them a light spray of undercoat to help with any inperfections

4) once the undercoat is dry give it another light sand - usually with a wet n dry sandpaper

5) Apply the second coat of undercoat, I always find the lighter the coat the better the end result will be.

6) Lightly sand once again, wipe the eye with a damp cloth to remove any dust from the sanding.

7) Apply a coat of either satin or flat white paint, once dry repeat.

Then you should have a fantastic pair of puppet eyes. This is meant for everyday puppets - puppets which will be used under either theatre lights or TV studio lights are treated differently to stop the whiteness of the eyes blowing out on screen, but that is a much more invloved process .

Latest update for the baby brother puppet. All limbs have been finished and attached.ABOVE - Legs are attached to body using doll joints, allows the puppet to either sit or stand. The legs are made from sheet foam and covered with antron, the toes are posable - made the same as hands with a wire armature inside.
ABOVE - the arms have been connected to the body by the internal support, just needs the antron to be hand sewn. At this point the head is just sitting on the body to see if all the proportions are correct.
ABOVE - finally all parts are sewn together, starting to look like a baby.
ABOVE - Puppet is now finished ( apart from his clothing ) Eyes have been glued on , eyebrows and tongue have been attached. Now moving on to the clothing. His tuft of hair at the back is longer than it shows in the photo - I think the bright light behind his head has blown out the hair.

Next are the babies arms. Below are the patterns for the foam structure, because he is a baby I have given him plumper looking arms .BELOW - the foam glued together with a string through the middle which will be attached to the hand at one end and the body on the other to sop the arms from stretching once they are all put together.
Sorry this is a shorter post than usual - I have a few more updates to add but the photos are still in my camera, so hopefully I will add more in the coming days.

Here are a few updates of the baby puppet project.
ABOVE - Closed cell foam skull because he will have an eyebrow mech inside , it just helps to keep the head shape better.
ABOVE - mouth plate and lower jaw attached ( lower jaw is carved foam) also the eyebrow mech has been connected to the inside of his head. Currently has black electrical tape on the eye brow mech so I can position everything correctly.
ABOVE - The dyed antron fleece pattern cut for the head. made it all in one piece to minimise the seams.
ABOVE - foam cheeks were added and skin stretched over skull ready to be hand stitched on.

Next update will show hands and arms and maybe more work on the head. Have a great day

I left the design up to Eric and as you can see in the sketches he sent he is quite a character. making of a recent puppet

Below are a few photos of a puppet I recently built for sale on Ebay. I was going to take more photos but got carried away and forgot. but you can still see a little of how he was built.

ABOVE: The body - to give a stripey effect 24 separate pieces were sewn together. The body has a cone shape to it so all pieces are on a slight angle to create the cone shape. A similar design was made for the structure of the body , in the structure cone three "hoops" of boning was used to keep the round shape.
ABOVE: Head and Eyes - Head has a reticulated foam skull , the nose has wadding and a light weight ( teddy bear beads) in the tip of the nose to give it some weight. The eyes were custom made by joining two spheres together then a 5 layer spray paint. Ears and hair was added later.
ABOVE: Arms - The arms were made the same as the body with strips of fur sewn together. The arms were left empty to give a floppy look , the hands were made from reticulated foam wire wire inside so they are posable.

ABOVE : Nosey Monster - Finished product. This puppet was made from 40 separate pieces of fur to give the stripey effect. A lot of pre planning goes into designing and patterning puppets such as Nosey Monster.

Hope this have given you a small insight into how I produce my puppets.

Just a quick thank you to all who have recently contacted me for your patience, I have recently been extremely busy building puppets and haven't really had the time to sit down and reply to as many emails as I would like. I have recently been making many client orders - also I like to keep my Ebay puppets going as I know its a great way for puppeteers and fans to get an original puppet at a great price. I have also just finished a secret puppet order for one of my most favourite muppeteers - more on that when I can. Towards the end of the year I will be having a break from puppet building to let my brain relax. I am also working on a project to help new puppet builders build their own puppets which I am very excited about.

Also thank you to all those who write fan mail about my work , it's always encouraging to hear that you guys like my work - keeps me going when somedays I just don't feel like being covered in stray pieces of fur :) Have a great day

To speed up answering it would really help if your email was more specific of what you are after, it's actually quite hard to quote when the email is " how much for a puppet?" - it would be like walking into a car yard and saying " how much for a car?" there are many different types and sizes which need to be taken into account when building a puppet. After working for a few hours I sat back staring at my work studio realising what a crazy profession I have, I build characters from scratch and they are all over the world. I finally got my Miss Piggy out of her box she has been in for the past year or so and finally finished her ( just need to find her a ring to wear) - it's not the best photo but you get the idea. So funny when people ask me what I do for a living and my answer is always " I build puppets" I usually get "oh....... that sounds...... interesting" as they raise one eye brow "so you sew?" " yes I sew, and carve and spray" - Anyway as they say, find a job you love and you will never work a day in your life :)

Beyonce being constructed, is this photo considered puppet porn? haha - well this is a photo I took while making her costume. all hand made - I think it turned out wonderful. Her head is made from reticulated foam and her body from closed cell foam and her boobies carved from a soft foam, all covered in Antron fleece. Her arms are reticulated foam with leather joints.

PIG UPDATE

His body has been made with sheet closed cell foam, I have made him so that he will be able to detach his head from body with velcro - and I have made the body big enough for the head to store inside the body - to save on space as he is a rather large puppet.

Not a very exciting photo but these are his hands , they will be sewn onto the lining of the arm sleeves then inserted into the hoodie sleeves.

Below is his hoodie I have made - still needs the zipper and cuffs / waist band . It's the same pattern I used to make Nicky from Avenue Q's hoodie , I just made it a little bigger around the stomach.

Here we have him partly assembled, still no arms. Still haven't decided if I like the sideways cap yet - I may give him ears and hair yet.

Just another angle of the pig, I am actually really happy with him - one of those puppets that really comes alive once to put him on.

I will try and give more updates as I finish him.....

Hamming it up

Ok so I always try and experiment with different shapes for puppets, usually my heads are patterned from sheet foam ( I seem to enjoy creating 3D shapes from sheet foam) but every now and then I will experiment and carve a head. Which brings me to my latest project, a pig that likes to eat. After sculpting the head I then created the fleece pattern and covered his head with Antron fleece. I also added an eyebrow mech - his eyes can look excited as the top eyelids raise, almost as if he has seen and "all you can eat" sign .

My ideas keep changing for his character - firstly he was designed to be a chef, but now I like the idea of him being a college student so I will make him a hoodie and he will wear a backwards cap. Hopefully soon I will have another progress update, but he is a labor of love inbetween client orders. Have a great day

Below are a few construction photos of Marc, below is his "skin" once it was patterned and sewn together. The heads are better off hand sewn to hide the seams better.

Below is the foam head made from reticulated foam and a timber mouthplate for added strength.

Next two photos are with the "skin now place over the foam skull, the only place where the "skin" is attached to the skull is around the mouth.

And that is where I forgot to keep taking progress shots, but below are the finished puppet.

Monster puppet

Hi all below are a few basic steps for a puppet I recently sold on Ebay . Below is the first rough sketch I drew trying to decide what the puppet will look like - I try and stick to my designs when building.
Below is the body fur cut and ready to be sewn - next to the red fur is the pattern for the orange fur which runs down the front of the monster.

Below is the mouthplate covered in the black fabric, it also shows the pattern from which the foam will be cut to make the foam snout shape - which will be dyed before glueing.

Below is the pattern for the glove hands, the upper arm is attached about halfway down the arm and then connected at the shoulders.

Below is the completed fur body with the arms attached to the shoulders. The head and glove hands are next to be added.

Below is the snout area after being dyed and glued, also a design has been incorporated into the snout using a blue colour. You can also see one of the domes painted white which will be used for the eyes

Eyes and eyebags glued onto head, with black eyebrows ( not easy to see the black eyebrows in this photo)

Below is the finished puppet, ostrich feather was also added for hair and goatee.

Redo Gonzo

I have recently started my new gonzo replica again - I started a few months ago, using the gonzo poser as a guide - but I felt the eyes were too small when using the same size as the poser - so I have given him larger eyes - which I think look much more like the real gonzo. In this photo alot of it is just sitting in place - hopefully over the next few months I will be able to update him more. Unfortunately I dont have a lot of time lately to work on replicas.

Sea Otter Puppet Part 6

Here is the Sea Otter puppet finally finished, I must say he turned out better than expected.
He was an experiment in trying to make a cute animal puppet but steer away from the "Muppet" look - try and steer more into the cute animation style of animal. I will try and shoot a short video of him soon to show his movement. Hope you like him - now all I need to do is think of a name for him - any suggestions??

Sea Otter Puppet Part 5

Ok sea otter now has his nose, which is hand carved reticulated foam dyed, I am happy with the head.

Below are the sea otters hands with arm rods, its the same color antron fleece as the bridge on his snout area.

Below is the body shape , constructed from sheet foam. The body is made up of 5 segments.

Photo below is showing the reinforcement ring made from closed cell foam to help the body keeps its shape.

Below is the Sea Otter with his eyes and ears attached, all is needed now is the nose to be dyed and the head is finished, next is moving onto the body.

Below is a side view of the eyes and ears, sea otters have cute little downward facing ears.

Foam skull has been constructed from sheet foam, Otter whiskers have been added.

Above shot of the foam skull, I find it useful at this point to draw on the skull the placement of the eyes and any other details so I can see if the design works in 3D.

The fur has been attached to the skull and trimmed around the face. also the top of his snout area has been covered with a dark brown Antron fleece.

Once the eyes have been sprayed white I place them on the head just to see if its all working out how I see it in my head - so far so good, next it the eye details and attaching eyes to head, and ears - then the head is complete.

Sea Otter Puppet

Above is a sketch for a sea otter puppet I have been slowly working on over the past few months inbetween jobs. He has a hand carved snout and mouth area carved from a block of reticulated foam. Then covered with antron fleece, moutplate is seperate and has been attached into place.

Green Monster Update

Oh dear, this didn't work out the way I had hoped - I kind of got carried away and forgot to take pictures of this puppet, and now he is finished! So from the last update I covered his foam sculpted nose with Antron, attached four different colours of Ostrich plumes for his hair and added his hands and feet, both which are posable. He also has removable arm rods. I will try and take better pictures soon - this was just a quick reference shot of him on my puppet stand. Have a great day all

P.S. he wont always be wearing a T-shirt I was just trying it on him

Green Monster Update

Here is the green monster puppet updated - I have covered his head in fur and attached to the body, I have also carved his nose and pinned it to the head to check the size and shape. Next the nose will be covered in Antron fleece and I will make him a set of eyes. I have also made his tongue which has been made from a pink ultra suede and outlined with a dark red pen.
